OUR STORY

Akwaaba means ‘Welcome’ in the Twi language of the Akan people in Ghana & it embodies the intrinsic warmth and hospitality of the country.

Melbourne’s first West African restaurant/bar at the beach end of Fitzroy Street, St Kilda, offers traditional exceptional West African & fusion dishes.

The AKWAABA experience is an authentic & memorable journey into the food, music, culture & colour of this welcoming, vibrant part of Africa.

You can get all your favourite drinks at the bar, but make sure you do yourself a favour & try our speciality exotic cocktails made from African spices.

There are very few West African restaurants Australia, and the cuisine is quite different to Central & Eastern Africa.

A diverse range of foods used in our dishes include rice, beans, yam,
okra, cassava, plantain both whole & as flour.
While there is a strong emphasis on meat, chicken and fish, our menu has amazing vegetarian and vegan options too.

Traditionally, West African food is quite spicy but there are still a lot of delicious dishes with the temperature turned down.

Whether the flavours remind you of food from home, or you are intrigued with new ingredients and dishes, one thing is for sure – you will be inspired about our exciting and delicious menu.
